Before the 1960’s the only caffeine drinks available were your old fashioned tea or coffee, where as today there is an endless range of caffeine drinks available to the consumer that are famous for their exotic taste, emphatic ‘buzz’ and renowned boost which results from the copious amounts of caffeine they contain. Little do people know, having multiple cups of coffee or high caffeine drinks present a day full of highs and lows followed by exhaustion. Just like any addictive drug, caffeine presents many dangers to its consumer. Saying this, caffeine is not the only damaging substance found in a common energy drink but it is what causes long term addiction, adrenal exhaustion and sleeping disorders.

Caffeine gives you that ‘buzz’ and boost by triggering neurons in the brain that, in turn, send signals to the pituitary glands to release a hormone that triggers the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline. Increased levels of adrenaline send signals to the cardiac centre, in the brain, which increases heart rate and blood pressure. This is a danger its own right and can seriously affect people suffering from heart problems and blood pressure issues. It can also create these problems entirely. People who suffer from heart problems have a significantly higher risk of a heart attack during this ‘buzz’ because of the increased stress on the heart. The ‘fight or flight’ process is activated but is useless unless actually fighting or ‘flighting’ and after this high wears off it can lead to headaches, confusion and fatigue. If consuming caffeine drinks every time this high wears off, the result is your body being tolerant to high adrenaline levels meaning it takes more to set off increased heart rate and blood pressure, this means you are consuming more and more to get that high. Not to mention, it will lead to the ‘fight or flight’ reaction being dormant when an actual situation arises in which you need adrenaline.

As well as physical dangers with caffeine, there are equally as severe mental dangers. The exhausted adrenal glands can result in long term exhaustion and fluctuating levels can lead to mood swings, depression, and anxiety as well as sleep disturbance. This seems like a big price to pay for a small ‘buzz’, which brings us on to the case of addiction. People deal with these risks because of the carving and addiction can be a danger in itself. Addiction can lead to dependence which is psychologically a danger as well as a physical danger. Not to forget, the withdrawal effects from caffeine are similar to those of cigarettes giving people all the more reason to forget about quitting.

Caffeine drinks are becoming a very big issue all over the world. There is meant to be an age limit of 16 to buy an energy drink but this is very poorly enforced in most places because of the popularity of energy drinks amongst the young society. Just like obesity, high caffeine energy drink, and even coffee, addiction will soon be seen as an epidemic, once the damage they can do is acknowledged by everyone. Until then the caffeine drink market will remain alongside smoking as one of the largest markets in the world.

cocaine in the work placeCocaine, one of the most widely used dugs in the entire world, commonly associated with the rich and celebrities; it can be found in many movies portraying the “High life” of superstars. But it can commonly be found in many workplaces, statistics state that over 70% of convicted users were in full time employment at the time of arrest proving that just about anybody could be using cocaine.

With its high level of addiction it should at all costs be avoided. Not only will the user become dependant on the drug mentally because of the drug abuse, but cocaine will also render the user physically dependant causing yet more problems if they’re addicted.

Because of the addictiveness of the drug it can cause great issues in the workplace, some of which can be outlined below:
· Dealing the substance would result in an immediate arrest, leaving the user with a criminal record which would drastically reduce the chance of employment in the future.
· If employees are abusing the substance this could lead to dealing in the workplace between colleges thus creating more risks for the employees and the employer.
· Users could begin to gain a negative work ethic and thus begin to loose focus in the work that they are producing which in-turn will allow room for errors or mistakes in work that may be incredibly important to their company.

Employers should be aware that cocaine use and drug abuse in general is on the rise and preventing the substance from entering their workplace should be a priority to be addressed. Precautions should be put in place to prevent employees being able to abuse substances such as cocaine. Methods of doing this could consist of:
· Create a company policy which outlines clearly the consequences of substance abuse while employed for the company.
· Carry out random drug tests to attempt to catch users out.
· Keep records of employees performance so that when an anomaly is found it can be investigated to find a solution to the issue.
· Educate employees of the effects of cocaine abuse and how it can affect them as individuals but also as a company.

Do not allow you company to be in the situation where it is known that some employees have been abusing cocaine, who would want to purchase items or services from a company that has drug users employed? You need to remember that customers want to trust the people who they are giving their money over to; they want to feel secure knowing that employers only employ professional employees, people who consumers can rely on to provide them with quality service and not employees with drug abuse issues. For more help please see our Employers Handbook.

Cocaine shouldn’t ever be brought into or anywhere near a workplace; it should be avoided at all costs as drug abuse can destroy a company’s reputation and also the lives of the user.

Many people that are substance abusers and perhaps their family and friends as well hold a belief that once the person that is abusing alcohol and/or drugs gets off the alcohol and/or drugs that all will be well and that the person will then be well and healed and ready for life.

In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Substance abuse is only a symptom of usually many, many problems that revolve around the way the person thinks and their emotional maturity. In fact once substance abusers get off the substance they were abusing truly the beginning is just now starting for healing and learning to live successfully and happy in society.

There are as many underlying issues of substance abuse as there are people that abuse them. Many have mental illness and will need be placed on a medication that is not contradictory to the recovery program. Some will need to be placed on more than one medication. Substance abuse can be a person self mediating a mental illness problem.

Additionally, some other underlying issues once substance abuse is removed is the negative and self centered thinking that the vast majority of alcoholics and drug abusers have. They have these traits while they are using as well as when they are in recovery. The recovery program will help them learn to overcome these ways of thinking and the self-centeredness. But the family and friends of the person must realize it takes a lot of time to overcome these things.

There also is involved in the underlying issues of substance abuse emotional immaturity. Most substance abusers suffer from severe emotional immaturity and the program of recovery teaches them how to grow up emotionally into the chronological age that they currently are. Some of the signs of this emotionally immaturity are a bad temper, anxiety and fear.

In fact fear is the number one underlying problem for most substance abusers. They are afraid of people, economic insecurity and places. They may be afraid of other things as well such as abandonment and rejection. Once the substance abuse is taken away, the person is left to deal with these things in a sober state. Needless to say, gaining sobriety and staying sober is a daunting task and it takes a lot of support from those others in recovery as well as family members and friends.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share a common desire to stop drinking. The only requirement is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees nor does it cost anything to go to a meeting. So how do you know if you belong there?

Remember, the only requirement is a desire to stop drinking. In the meetings you don’t have to identify yourself as an alcoholic if you are unsure you can just sit and listen and see if you can relate to any of the things being said. Also you might want to talk to someone after the meeting and share your reason for coming to the meeting.

No one can determine if you are an alcoholic but you. Friends, family, doctors, clergy and therapists all may say you are but until you can be completely honest with yourself about your drinking there is no way you will be able to stop. Statistically many have stopped on their own without AA but they are not happy people and usually go back to drinking. In Alcoholics Anonymous you will find a fellowship and a way to not drink as well as experience true happiness without it.

Is it easy? Absolutely not. If it were then so many people wouldn’t be dying due to alcohol related physical complications. Currently only 2% of alcoholics make it to AA and stay sober. That’s not a high percentage. But it certainly should not discourage anyone who thinks they may have a problem with alcohol to step thru the doors and give it all they have. To make it in AA you must have willingness and an open mind.

You may not have these at first and that’s ok. But if you keep reading the books of AA and do what the members tell you to as well as work hard on your program, then assuredly you will develop these characteristics of an open mind and willingness.

After you have been to a few meetings you will realize that you are advised to get what is called a sponsor. This is a person of your same gender who you like what they have to say and who will walk you thru the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. These steps are the design of AA that will lead you to a life of happiness, joyfulness and freedom.

If you think you have a drinking problem ask yourself this, can you stop after taking one drink or do you drink until you get drunk? Do you hide alcohol from your family, partner and friends so that they are not aware of how much you are drinking? Do you have a craving for alcohol? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions and are sick and tired of being sick and tired then perhaps you should consider attending an AA meeting.
To find a meeting you can go online and type in Alcoholic Anonymous and the name of your city or you can look in the phone book under Alcoholics Anonymous. Either of these places will give you the many times and many locations of AA meetings in your area.

It may take time for some drug addicts to admit their problem and become willing to seek help. For years, this has been one of the prohibiting factors where drug rehab hasn’t been on an addict’s agenda. However, the first important step on the road to recovery is to recognize and accept the problem of addiction. Whether it is crack, cocaine, marijuana, heroin or alcohol, there is always the opportunity to recover fully from addiction. There are several drug rehab and alcohol treatment programs that offer inpatient and outpatient treatment options.

If you find yourself or a loved one in this situation the first think is to accept the problem and confide in family members or trusted friends. In many cases, your family may already know what you are going through and are waiting for you to make the first move. On the other hand, it is important to take that first step since some families prefer to remain in denial until it is too late. Once you have the emotional support of your family, the next step is to seek Drug Alcohol counseling. Many drug rehab centers offer a free counseling session in order to evaluate an addict’s condition and the type of treatment required. With due encouragement from family and friends, seeking treatment is an easy task especially when you are in the hands of experts who know how to deal with such situations.

Drug or alcohol rehab treatment programs vary depending on the type of addiction and the addict’s circumstances and extent of drug or alcohol dependency. One of the most important elements of drug rehab is therapy. Addicts need to go through the detoxification and withdrawal process which is the toughest part in the recovery process. The next stage includes counseling and therapy which is one of the critical stages where the risk of relapse is always present. Therefore, it is important to find the right drug or alcohol treatment programs that suits your needs best. One of the main objectives of counseling is to help addicts eliminate the craving for drugs or alcohol and live a drug free life. It is important to understand that every addict has specific needs, which are why drug and alcohol rehab centers offer customized programs in order to enhance the success of recovery. While programs vary, the main stages in treatment include intervention and initiation, abstinence, maintenance of abstinence, and recovery.

Drug rehab can involve months of therapy sessions where a counselor will monitor the progress of addicts, gearing them for the lifelong process of recovery. This is an important stage where an addict learns to re-channel the urge to use drugs or alcohol and learns new ways to cope with life. For the most part, it is important to find the right drug or alcohol rehab treatment program to suit your needs keeping in mind that an effective program for one addict may not be the right one for another. Don’t hesitate to contact drug and alcohol rehab centers in your area for the best possible program.

One of the biggest problems with Marijuana is that this drug is not considered to be a ‘serious drug’. Many teens and even adults view it as some sort of having fun that has no lasting consequences on a person or their life and health. So, let us take a look at it and try to answer the question: is marijuana abuse something to worry about?

First, here is one of the most alarming facts on this drug. According to statistic, up to 40 percent of school teens have already tried Marijuana. This drug is widely available and low in cost, even though its use and sale is illegal. The availability and low cost makes it very appealing for young rebels. They do not view it seriously and even the most responsible ones think it is no big deal to smoke it once in a while.

There is hope

Now, the worst thing Marijuana does, as any other drug, such as alcohol for instance, it takes over a life and makes people to live their lives around it. It becomes the center of life, of desire and substitute for happiness. In fact, it offers happiness and excitement with no efforts taken on the part of a person. No high values or standards, no will for good; just easy, cheap and always available pleasure.

Another effect of Marijuana abuse is loss of interest in real life. Marijuana opens the door to ‘virtual life and imagined happiness and satisfaction’. It comes to possess the thoughts and feelings of a person. It provides such easily available and bright experiences that nothing in the daily regular life can match up to them. This may lead to social withdrawal, loss of real life and consequently lead to stronger drugs abuse.

Using Marijuana makes a person feel exquisite, as if they knew some secret, unknown to others. This is a dangerous position, especially for teens. Teens do not tend to listen to their parents and view them as their authority. Marijuana abuse may only add up to that problem. They start feeling so wise and sophisticate that no adult remains of any authority and value to them. Such dangerous situation may lead to isolation, dangerous self destructive acts and socially unacceptable behavior.
So, even though marijuana is thought to be a mild drug, its abuse may result in life rack and personality destruction.
